Gardening Portage is a non-profit organization for gardeners in the City of Portage la Prairie and surrounding community. It is the lead for the City’s Manitoba Communities in Bloom entry; facilitates its various programs and volunteer opportunities including the Yard of the Week competition.
During the winter months of the year, Gardening Portage organizes gardening workshops and talks for community residents to attend.

Gardening Portage – 2020 Winter Gardening Workshops

Each workshop begins with a short summary of what is happening in the Portage gardening world.
Succulents – Monday, Jan 20th
You’ll learn from a local expert about this emerging gardening choice and as an option, participants create a succulent container garden. Keep inside this winter and use on your patio in the summer months.
There will be a $25 cost for this workshop for creating a succulent container garden. Further details are provided in the separate document and on the Gardening Portage Facebook page. Pre-registration for this workshop is required to determine the supplies needed for the container gardens.
Preparing your Garden: Composting & Natural Fertilizers – Tuesday, Feb 25th
There will be two speakers at this workshop. First, learn about making and using compost in your garden with a Manitoba expert from the Green Action Centre.
Next, did you know organic fertilizers are made in Manitoba? Enjoy hearing about these products from the Manitoba company who produces and sells these products.
Get ready to grow a Garden – Tuesday, March 25th
Have you wanted to plant garden but don’t know where to start? What about starting seedlings indoors – learn helpful tips to success. Raised garden beds are a newer trend. Learn their advantages at this workshop.
A horticultural expert will guide us through these topics.
Healthy Growing and Weed Identification – Monday, April 20th
What is that growing in your garden? It is something you planted or is it a weed? Know before you weed.
Our workshop leader will guide us through the world of keeping your garden tidy, weed and disease free. Bring your notebook as there will be many helpful hints and tips even the most seasoned gardens can use.
Other than the January succulent workshop, there is no cost for these workshops. Pre-registration by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or phoning 204-857-6598 is recommended. There may be garden products available for sale at workshops you have the option to purchase.
The Jan 20th workshop will be 7:30 to 9:30 PM and all other workshops will be 7 to 9 PM.
